Antares Speers 10mm
Antares 10mm Speers - Waller (Series 1) Eyepiece
First of all, let it be known that I'm relatively new to astronomy, picked up the scope a few months ago. It is a 12" f4.9 newtonian. That said, I have been making good use of it and the above stated eyepiece. The first thing you'll notice is the large size of the piece, at least double the size & weight of your average plossl.
Initially I got a GSO 32mm and 9mm plossl with the scope as pack-ins and ordered the SW as a "treat" at the same time. In comparison to the 9mm GSO, the SW has a much larger field of view (80* I believe) and images are noticeably brighter. Under dark skies this eyepiece is moderately suited to DSO observing, although I will admit to a noticeable loss of light transmission in comparison to the 32mm, which I use to assist in locating them (but that is a big difference in focal length between the two.
In my scope this EP is appreciated most when viewing the moon. At the 150x magnification it yields the only problem I've had with the image is atmospheric conditions. Craters are clearly visible and with the wide field of view one can see more of the moon in one eyefull than any similar plossl. Jupiter's cloud bands are also visible, I notice as well the 4 moons are tiny discs rather than points of light, and well focusable under optimum conditions
I haven't noticed any distortion (although I haven't looked too discerningly for it). One problem to consider before purchasing is that (in my scope) I almost have to bottom the focuser out to get focus, and it can be somewhat tricky at times. I've been told that a higher magnification could have been disastrous (beyond focusable range) - so be warned. I would say that for the $85 cdn I paid for this eyepiece it is a modest step up from what came with the scope and I understand that for a 'modest' $85, that's what I caould expect.
My final verdict? I'd say it performs reasonably well for the money, 7/10. I'll be wondering if that will change much when I put the first nagler in my scope?
